Earth-centered (geocentric) ? or sun-centered (heliocentric)

Orbits of Earth, Moon, & Sun

Earth’s orbital revolution

Earths orbital revolution

The Earth rotates from west to east about its axis: one complete rotation takes a day. The rotation of the Earth is responsible for the alternate periods of light and darkness, i.e. day and night. This is Earth’s axial rotation (2:164, 3:27, 3:190, 7:54, 10:6, 22:61, 23:80, 24:44, 25:62, 27:88, 31:29, 35:13, 36:40, 39:5, 45:5, 57:6, 91:3-4, 92:1-2).

The Earth also revolves in an orbit around the Sun, once in a year, i.e. about 365 days. The path of this revolution, the Earth’s orbit, is an ellipse rather than a circle. This is Earth’s orbital revolution (20:53, 21:33, 35:13, 36:40, 39:5, 43:10; cf. 78:6, 79:27-31, 91:1-6, 24:35, 12:4, 6:74-79, 78:12-13, 41:12, 27:24 , 37:1-7, 67:5, 10:3-6).

Thus, apart from the non-specific indications of Earth’s motion that we discussed elsewhere (e.g. 20:53, 43:10, 78:6, 41:11, 35:41, 77:25-26, 55:10, 2:22, 27:88), there are in the Quran a few ‘specific’ allusions to the orbital motion of an axially rotating Earth.

Below we will attempt to go through them.

Orbital motion of an axially rotating Earth

The Quran describes our planet Earth as a ‘mahd’ (20:53, 43:10; cf. ‘mihaada’ 78:6; cf. 3:46, 5:110, 19:29), which means in Arabic both a ‘cradle’ and a ‘merry-go-round’. This simultaneously alludes to both the axial and orbital motion of the Earth.

Earth’s orbital motion, in addition to axial, appears in an idiosyncratic way in the following statements:

It is He who created the night and the day and the Sun and the MoonAll swim along in orbit. 21:33

He merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night, and He has subjected the Sun and the MoonEach pursues its course for a term appointed. 35:13

This reference to the orbital motion of an axially rotating Earth gets more precise in the following verse:

He COILS the night around the day and He coils the day around the night; and He has subjected the Sun and the Mooneach RUNNING ALONG a course for a term appointed. 39:5

It is interesting to observe how the two separate verbs above – ‘yukawwir’ (‘coils’, like a rotating ‘ball’ or ‘kurah’) and ‘yajree’ (‘runs along’, a motion which is in orbit; cf. All swim along in orbit. 21:33) – make a clear distinction between the two types of terrestrial motion.

Thus, while the verb ‘coils’ indicates Earth’s axial rotation causing the succession of night and day, the verb ‘runs along’ refers to the orbital motion of ‘each (‘kullun’), which as a plural pronoun here includes ‘the revolving night and day’ (the revolving Earth) along with the Sun, Moon and so on.

This parallel allusion to Earth’s orbital and axial motion gets even more specific in the following statement:

Neither is it for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; and ALL swim along in orbit. 36:40

All these verses maintain that ‘the rotating night and day’ – an allusion throughout the Quran to the revolving Earth – ‘swim along in orbit together with the ‘swimming’ of the Sun and the Moon, which are Earth’s star and satellite respectively. Thus we get simultaneous references to Earth’s both types of motion.

‘Rotating night and day’ are orbiting around the Sun

Let us ponder on this verse, apparently explicit about Earth’s orbital and axial motion:

Neither is it for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; and ALL swim along in orbit. 36:40

This implies that celestial objects, like the Sun, the Moon and so on, cannot normally deviate from their courses or collide with each other, as they are held and arranged in their orbits in perfect order by the precise laws of motion. Also, the day and the night cannot outstrip each other as they incessantly occur on opposite sides of the revolving Earth.

Now – following this mention of the moving heavenly bodies like the Sun and the Moon and then of revolving night and day (cf. 39:5) – the phrase ‘ALL swim along in orbit clearly indicates that the rotating Earth (‘revolving night and day’) is also swimming along in an orbit.

However, night and day – while swimming along in an orbit – will cease to exist, if they are not constantly around their source, the Sun.

In other words:

If ‘revolving night and day’ are swimming along in an orbit, their orbit has to be around the Sun, the continuous cause of night and day!

This is the exact description from a spaceship about the planet Earth, which – with its axial rotation that generates the constant cycle of day and night – is moving forward in its orbit around the Sun.

That Earth’s orbital revolution is around the Sun is further confirmed by a parallel reading of the above verse together with e.g. 79:27-31, 91:1-6, 24:35, 12:4, 6:74-79, 78:12-13, 41:12, 27:24 , 37:1-7, 67:5 and 10:3-6.

Please observe that the verb ‘yasbahun’ (‘swim along’) is in plural and so does the word ‘kullu’ here also refers to plural (‘all’). In Arabic, plural necessarily implies more than two subjects, as there is separate verbal form for dual. So, neither ‘kullu’ is a pronoun for the Sun and the night only, nor ‘yasbahun’ involves only them, but both overwhelmingly exceed them both and, thus going beyond them, encompass everything: putting absolutely everything in the Universe in compulsory motion in ‘orbits’, ordained and strictly governed by divine Law.

Thus the phrase ‘and ALL swim along in orbit’ refers not only to the motion of the Earth or various celestial bodies like the Sun or the Moon, but also to the motion of the entire cosmos – from the colossal motion of superclusters, to the quantum motion at subatomic levels, to the motion or action as a fundamental attribute, essential for the existence of matter (energy) itself.

It is remarkable that the expression ‘KuLlun FiY FaLaK’ (36:40; cf. 21:33) – which literally means ‘all in orbit/ circuit’, alluding to the motion of the Sun, Moon, Earth etc in ‘a path that repeats itself’ – is palindromic (cyclical) in itself29, i.e. it reads the same backward or forward. Thus the expression itself – with letters arranged in a circular pattern (K, L, F, Y, F, L, K) reading the same backward or forward – symbolizes an ongoing circuit, i.e. the circular/ ellipsoid orbits.

Earth is a ‘loaded spaceship’

Now we will read 36:40 in context and observe the analogy between ‘the rotating Earth (‘rotating night and day’) swimming in orbit’ and ‘a loaded ship carrying human race’:

Neither is it for the Sun to overtake the Moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; and ALL swim along in orbit./ And a Sign unto them is that We bear their race in a loaded ship;/ And We have created for them things of a similar kind whereon they (will) ride. 36:40-42

Please note the clear association between ‘SWIM along in orbit’ in 36:40 and ‘loaded SHIP’ in 36:41. Also the link between ‘FALAK’ (orbit) and ‘FULK’ (ship) that further relates 36:40 to 36:41. Obviously, ‘their race’ above denotes the human race as a whole.

Parenthetically, this portrays the ‘rotating Earth (‘rotating night and day’) swimming in orbit’, as a ‘loaded ship carrying human race’ …

And, more precisely, as a loaded SPACESHIP! …

A spaceship that resembles various watercrafts and flying vessels including future starships and planets potentially suitable for human habitat (‘things of a similar kind whereon they (will) ride’)! …

This perceived image of the Earth as a ‘loaded spaceship’ is reinforced in our mind when we read the above passage in the context of other similar passages that persistently portray moving celestial bodies including the Earth as sailing ships, while comparing the cosmos with ocean (2:164; 10:18, 22; 14:32-33; 16:12-14; 22:65; 31: 29-31; 35:12-13; 36:40-42; 42:5, 32; 43:9-12; 45:12-13).

 Heliocentric concepts in the Quran.

In the Qur'an, a "firaşen" analogy is made for the earth. This word means a butterfly flying in circles around the light source. Since the Earth also flies around a light source like the Sun, he drew a heliocentric Earth model with an on-the-spot analogy. The Qur'an has again chosen the most suitable creature by bilim ve yaratılış

''...SUN AND THE MOON ARE ORBITING, ROTATING, OR HAVE A LIFE SPAN WITHOUT THE USUAL TANDEM OF WORDS that are included in many descriptions of the sun and the moon in the Quran. For example, the Quran constantly discusses aspects of the sun and moon (i.e. rotation, orbit or life) BUT it often includes the following words: "the night and the day and the sun and the moon." Unfortunately, many people often ACCIDENTALLY MAKE A CAUSAL CONNECTION between the description (I.E ROTATION, ORBIT OR LIFE) that the verse describes with the phenomenon of day or night. WHEN THE QURAN TALKS ABOUT "DAY AND NIGHT"( WORLD )* WHILE ALSO INCLUDING A DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE SUN OR MOON (i.e. rotation, orbit or life), IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THE DESCRIPTION (i.e. rotation, orbit or life) IS CONNECTED to the phenomenon of day or night also discussed in the verse. Since there is an abundance of information regarding the sun and the moon spread out among many different verses, we must view ALL the information IN ITS ENTIRETY. The following 4 verses prove that the Quran clearly acknowledges that the sun and moon have their own ROTATION, ORBIT AND LIFE SPAN without necessarily CONNECTING it to the phenomenon of day or night.''

1) SURAH 10:5 "He it is who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light, and ordained for it mansions that you might know the computation of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create it but with truth; He makes the signs manifest for a people who know. M.H. Shakir

2) SURAH 55:5 "The sun and moon follow courses exactly computed." Yusaf Ali

3) SURAH 13:2 "Allah is he who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see, and he is firm in power and he made the sun and the moon subservient to you; each one pursues its course to an appointed time; He regulates the affair, making clear the signs that you may be certain of meeting your Lord." M.H. Shakir

4) SURAH 41:37 "And among his signs are the night and the day and the sun and the moon; do not make obeisance to the sun nor to the moon." M.H. Shakir

The Arabic verb "sabaha" (yasbahuna) in this verse means rotation on its own axis. The Arabic word "falak" used for planets and planets' movements in Verse 21:33 can mean movement in its own "celestial sphere." Therefore, the Quran states that ALL celestial bodies including the earth rotate on their own axis or in their "celestial sphere." If one wants to connect the phenomenon of night and day to the rotation of all celestial planets than this verse PROVES that the Quran CORRECTLY STATES that day and night is the result of the EARTH’S ROTATION!!!!!

12) SURAH 21:33 " "It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: ALL (the celestial bodies) rotate (yasbahuna), each in their celestial spheres (falak)." Yusaf Ali, M.H. Shakir

Here an essential fact is clearly stated: the existence of orbits and rotation for all celestial bodies. This clearly describes what is happening to the earth as it rotates every 24 hours while it also orbits around the sun during a year’s time.

The Arabic word falak has often been translated as 'orbit' or 'sphere' depending on the context of the verse. Si Hamza Boubekeur in his translation of the Quran cites the diversity of interpretations given to it: "A sort of axle, like an iron rod, that a mill turns around; a celestial sphere, orbit, sign of the zodiac, speed, wave . . .", but he adds the following observation made by Tabari, the famous Tenth century commentator: "It is our duty to keep silent when we do not know." (XVII, 15). This shows just how incapable men were of understanding this concept of the Sun's and Moon's orbit or rotation. These concepts were not to be explained until centuries later. And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.
Yusuf Ali
And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.

None of the verses in the Quran state that the Sun orbits the Earth. All the Quranic verses simply detail two things:

1. That the Sun is moving.
2. That it has an orbit.

These two statements are what match with scientific facts.
The Sun is currently traveling through the Local Interstellar Cloud (near to the G-cloud) in the Local Bubble zone, within the inner rim of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way. Of the 50 nearest stellar systems within 17 light-years from Earth (the closest being a red dwarf named Proxima Centauri at approximately 4.2 light-years away), the Sun ranks fourth in mass. The Sun orbits the center of the Milky Way at a distance of approximately 2400026000 light-years from the galactic center, completing one clockwise orbit, as viewed from the galactic north pole, in about 225–250 million years. [1]
Although many people quote these Quranic verses, they contain no references to the Sun orbiting the Earth.

Does the Quran say the Sun orbits the Earth?

39:5 He created the heavens and the earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night. And He subjected the sun and the moon, each running for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving.

**(The mention of night and day is related/connected/involves Earth, in other words, the earth has an orbit if the night and day has an orbit, so the Earth is not immobile)(This Verse mentions the plural pronoun “each”. In Arabic language – plural is three or more, dual is two, and singular is one, so the Verse explicitly mentions the sun, the moon, and implicitly the Earth (day and night), all of them running, because “each running” in Arabic is “three or more” in this Verse)(In other words, if the Verse mentions more than two objects running, two of them are the sun and the moon, which are explicitly mentioned, then the other one is earth, because earth is implicitly mentioned when day and night are mentioned, because earth is involved in the day and night (earthly days and nights), then the Verse implicitly says that the earth is also running)***(Allah knows best)

36:38 And the sun runs to a term appointed for it. That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing. 36:39 And the moon - We have ordained for it phases, until it returns like the old date stalk. 36:40 It is not permitted for the sun to overtake (tud’rika) the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day, but all are floating in an orbit.

**(“tud’rika” also means “grasp”. The sun’s gravitational pull is strong to hold much larger masses than the moon and at much greater distances, but it is not permitted for the sun to grasp the moon, so, the moon keeps revolving around the Earth, instead of directly around the sun. The mention in the Qur’an of “the sun to grasp the moon”, regardless of “it is not permitted”, implies a heliocentric view, instead of geocentric)(Another interpretation is that, because the sun and the earth are both involved in that the day and night may run, then a figurative interpretation of the Verse is that if “the day” was “the sun”, and “the night” was “the earth”, (the verse says “nor can the night outstrip the day”), so this could imply that the earth is gravitationally grasped by the sun, not the other way around. This is a heliocentric view, not geocentric)(Another point is that there is a palindrome in Verse 36:40: “kullun fi falakin” (all in an orbit). “Palindrome” is a word or phrase that reads the same backward and forward)(See also the article below “Palindromes in the Qur'an”, in which there is a picture of the palindrome, which suggests “revolving around” (e.g. the earth revolving around the sun, and the moon directly revolving around earth and indirectly around the sun))***(Allah knows best) by amin

21:33 And He is the One Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; each floating in an orbit.

(This Verse also mentions the plural pronoun and plural verb “each floating”. In Arabic language – plural is three or more, dual is two, and singular is one, so the Verse explicitly mentions the sun, the moon, and implicitly the Earth, all of them floating, because “each floating” in Arabic is “three or more”)(Allah knows best)

91:1 By the sun and its brightness, 91:2 And the moon when it follows it, 91:3 And the day when it displays it, 91:4 And the night when it covers it,

(The sun is immobile in terms of night and day, because it is the day what displays the brightness of the sun (91:3), and it is the night what covers the brightness of the sun (91:4))(When day and night are mentioned in the Qur’an, then Earth is implicitly mentioned, because the mention of night and day is related/connected/involves the Earth. The rotation of the Earth around its own axis causes the day and night. If the sun is immobile in terms of night and day, then the Earth, which is also involved, is the one that is moving, not the sun. So, according to these Verses, the rotation of the Earth displays and covers the sun’s brightness)(Allah knows best)

25:45 Do you not see how your Lord how extends the shadow? And if He willed, surely He could have made it stationary. Then We made the sun an indication (dalilan) of it. 25:46 Then We withdraw it to Us, a gradual withdrawal.

(The sun’s brightness and the earth are involved in the “Shadow”. According to Verse 25:45, the sun is an indication of the shadow, so the sun indicates the orbit of the earth, not the other way round. (The sun’s gravity pulls on the earth))(So, the Earth’s rotation causes the shadow to change length, because the sun is immobile in terms of night and day (91:3-4))(The root of “dalilan” (indication) is “Dal-Lam-Lam”, and it means “indicate, direct, guide, lead, etc.”, so the orbit of the earth is led by the sun)(Allah knows best) by amin

35:13 He causes to enter the night into the day and He causes to enter the day into the night, and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each running for aappointed term. That is Allah, your Lord, for Him is the Dominion. And those whom you invoke besides Him, they do not possess even (as much as) the membrane of a date-seed.

(There is an implicit mention of earth in Verse 35:13, because earth is involved in the day and night. Each / all are running)(Allah knows best)

13:15 And to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the mornings and in the afternoons.

(The sun is a lamp (71:16), so the shadows are on earth, and the shadows are the ones who “do” the prostration. So, it implicitly refers to earth (rotation of earth), because the earth is involved in the shadows)(Allah knows best)

28:71 Say, "Have you seen if Allah made the night continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who (is the) god besides Allah who could bring you light? Then will you not hear?" 28:72 Say, "Have you seen if Allah made the day continuous for you till (the) Day (of) the Resurrection, who (is the) god besides Allah who could bring you night (for) you (to) rest in it? Then will you not see?" 28:73 And from His Mercy He made for you the night and the day, that you may rest therein and that you may seek from His Bounty, and so that you may be grateful.

(As we saw in previous Verses, night and day refers to earth, because the sun, which is also involved, is immobile in regard to day and night (91:3-4), so the earth moves. “Night and day” is also mentioned in Verse 28:73, in regard to making the night or the day continuous (e.g. earth stops rotating). Notice that Verses 28:71-73 are also subjective (e.g. “continuous for you”), which indicates that, if the day is made continuous for you, it might not be so for other people, because the Earth is round. So, the Qur’an is scientifically correct)(In regard to Judaism and Christianity, the Bible says in Joshua 10:12-13, “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. So the sun stood still … The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day”. It is an order addressed to the sun and about the sun itself, instead of to the rotation of planet earth, so it is unscientific)(Allah knows best)by amin

Does the Qur’an support a geocentric view of the universe?

Sahih International
It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.

''This sentence can have two meanings and both are correct. (1) The sun does not have the power that it should draw the moon into itself, or enter its orbit and collide with it.
(2) The sun cannot appear in the times which have been appointed for the rising and appearing of the moon. It is not possible that the sun should suddenly appear on the horizon when the moon is shining at night.

Nor does this happen either that the night should approach before the appointed period of the day comes to an end, and should start spreading its darkness suddenly during the time when the day is meant to spread its light.''

The mentioning of the “night and day” cycle along with the “sun and moon” orbits in those verses does not necessarily indicate a geocentric perspective. Although they are mentioned together in several verses in the Qur’an, they are always grouped together separately from each other in all of those instances. It’s never said as “the night with the moon” or “the day with the sun” in any of those instances. In addition to that, the moon is not always visible at night nor is it only visible at night. This further disassociates the mentioning of “night and day” with the “sun and the moon”.

There is also the context of those verses as well, which is not about the day/night dichotomy, but about the signs of God in the universe with the “day and night” being one of them and the “sun and moon” being another. With regard to the verse in question:

Qur’an 21:30-36: Are the disbelievers not aware that the heavens and the earth used to be joined together and that We ripped them apart, that We made every living thing from water? Will they not believe? And We put firm mountains on the earth, lest it should sway under them, and set broad paths on it, so that they might follow the right direction, and We made the sky a well-secured canopy––yet from its wonders they turn away. It is He who created night and day, the sun and the moon, each floating in its orbit. We have not granted everlasting life to any other human being before you either [Muhammad]––if you die, will [the disbelievers] live forever? Every soul is certain to taste death: We test you all through the bad and the good, and to Us you will all return. When the disbelievers see you, they laugh at you: ‘Is this the one who talks about your gods?’ They reject any talk of the Lord of Mercy.

Here, in addition to the “night and day” and “sun and moon”, we also see the mention of “the heavens and the earth”, the “mountains”, every living thing being made from water, and the “sky”. You cannot possibly associate all of those things exclusively with each other, yet the attempt is made to do so if the “day and night” happen to be mentioned in the same verse as the “sun and moon”?

9. ECLIPSES OF THE SUN OR MOON:  Allāh reveals in Qur’an 36:40: “Neither is it for the sun to overtake (or catch up to) the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. And all float on in an orbit.”   .... states: “For a solar eclipse to occur however, the sun and the moon actually must (from the perspective of the earth) “catch up” to each other in their “orbits.”
Answer:  And how do you know that Allāh was referring to it “from the perspective of the earth”?  Incidentally, for the Prophet Mohammad to convey that the sun and the moon “swims along in (its own) orbit” is one of the miracles coming from the mouth of a denizen of the desert 1400 years ago.
Yusuf Ali comments on this verse (36:40): “Though the sun and the moon both traverse the belt of the Zodiac, and their motions are different, they never catch up each other. When the sun and the moon are on the same side and on a line with the earth there is a solar eclipse, and when on opposite sides in a line, there is a lunar eclipse, but there is no clash …Similarly, Night and Day follow each other, but being opposite cannot coincide.”   Thus, the sun and moon not being able to “catch up” to the other means they do not “clash.” (      via no god but allah. org  )

The sun is at an early stage in its existence; it should last about another 5.5 billion years. During this period hydrogen transforms into helium, with the resulting expansion of its external layers and the cooling of the sun. In the final stage, its light is greatly diminished and density considerably increased. This is to be observed in the type of star known as a white dwarf. Verse 36:38 clearly establishes the end of the sun’s life when we see that this verse is connected by the word "and" to the words "old" and "returns" in verse 36:39. These words "old" and "returns" seem to suggest an elapsed period of time that is very long. Moreover, the translation for verse 36:38 is a "period determined" or the word "mustaqarr" which means a final end. The word "Mustaqarr" used in verse 36:38 is different from the word "Ajaleen Mossama" or "appointed time" used in verses 13:2, 31:29, 39:5 and 35:13 (which could relate to orbit or rotation or life span.) The above dates are only of interest in as far as they give a rough estimate of the time factor involved, what is worth remembering and is really the main point of the above, is the notion of an evolution. Modern data allow us to predict that, in a few billion years, the conditions prevailing in the solar system will not be the same as they are today. Like other stars whose transformations have been recorded until they reached their final stage, it is possible to predict an end to the Sun. (Bucaille)

The sun and moon have their own orbits in the universe. Verse 36:40 clearly establishes the existence of the Sun’s and Moon’s orbit by stating that the sun will not "catch" (Yusaf Ali) or "overtake" (M.H. Shakir) the moon: i.e. the "sun," "moon," "day" and "night" will remain separate phenomenon since the sun and moon travel in their own orbits and hence will never collide. If the sun and moon were not in their own "exact" orbits (55:5), the phenomenon of "day" and "night" would most certainly be affected. The moon orbits around the earth every 29.5 days while it also is orbiting the sun along with the earth. The sun orbits the galaxy; to complete one revolution on its own axis, the galaxy and Sun take roughly 250 million years. The sun travels at roughly 150 miles per second in the completion of this. (Bucaille)

SURAH 21:33 " "It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: ALL (the celestial bodies) rotate (yasbahuna), each in their orbit/celestial sphere (falak)

The Arabic word falak has often been translated as 'orbit' or 'sphere' depending on the context of the verse ( by frank )

Fa-Lam-Kaf = become round, anything circular, persist/persevere, ship, Ark, the place of the revolving of the stars, the celestial sphere, vault of heaven, firmament, surrounding spheres, sky, revolvement, circling, circuit, going to and fro, in a state of commotion, whirl of a spindle, one who goes round.

Now in regards to Noble Verse 36:38:
Arabic (from right to left):
36:38 والشمس تجري لمستقر لها ذلك تقدير العزيز العليم
"And the sun runs (different from the "sun's orbit" or "orbit of the sun" in other Noble Verses [1]) on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.  (The Noble Quran, 36:38)"
Running is going fast.  Our sun and moon to our naked eyes are NOT running while rising and setting upon us.  Our solar system is traveling very fast in space.  This is also where we know that the UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING.  The Quran made this claim also:  "And the firmament, We constructed with power and skill and verily We are expanding it."  (The Noble Quran, 51:47).
Running in Arabic is جرى, which is what تجري is derived from.  There are also many Words that speak about the motion of earth in space:  دحاها DAHAHA, كفاتا KIFAATA, تقوم TAQOOM, وضعها WADA'AHA, تمر TAMUR, مهاداMIHAADA, تزولا TAZOOL, تميد TAMEED.  Also, all celestial bodies, يعرجون Yaa'rujoon (traveling in orbits [2] [3] [4] [5]) in space.  Also other Arabic words عرج , عروج معارج  and  معراج  that all refer to "going in an orbital and curvy path" in the Glorious Quran and our Islamic Texts ( by osama abdallah )

Scientists today believe that our galaxy is currently traveling towards a Black Hole and Star Vega.  So the sun, which is the mother of our Solar System, will not just exist forever.  There will come a time where it will come to a halt in both motion and light.

The Sun lies close to the inner rim of the Milky Way's Orion Arm, in the Local Interstellar Cloud or the Gould Belt, at a distance of 7.5–8.5 kpc (25,000–28,000 light-years) from the Galactic Center.[131][132] [133][134][135][136] The Sun is contained within the Local Bubble, a space of rarefied hot gas, possibly produced by the supernova remnant Geminga,[137] or multiple supernovae in subgroup B1 of the Pleiades moving group.[138] The distance between the local arm and the next arm out, the Perseus Arm, is about 6,500 light-years.[139] The Sun, and thus the Solar System, is found in what scientists call the galactic habitable zone. The Apex of the Sun's Way, or the solar apex, is the direction that the Sun travels relative to other nearby stars. This motion is towards a point in the constellation Hercules, near the star Vega.via wikipedia

Motion and location

All stars and planets have orbits.

For centuries it was believed that Earth is fixed and the sun, moon and planets revolve around it. However 1400 years ago the Quran said that not only the sun and moon but even Earth moves in a designated path:
[Quran 39.5] [Allah] Created the heavens and the Earth in truth. He overlaps the night over the day and overlaps the day over the night, and enslaved the sun and the moon, ALL MOVE (Kullon Yajree كل يجري) to a prerecorded destiny. Is He not the Exalted, the Forgiver?
>>>
Here the Quran is referring to ALL MOVING: not only the sun and moon but also Earth. In Arabic grammar there is difference between the singular (one), binary (two) and plural (three or more). The reference to binary is "Kulahuma Yajreean كلاهما يجريان" however the Quran said "Kullon yajree كل يجري" referring to the plural (three or more). Since the sun and moon are just two but the Quran refers to three or more then according to the Quran all the three move: sun, moon and Earth.***
As stars or planets move their gravity pull in the surrounding material, this is how our solar system formed. First the sun sucked in the Hydrogen then the proto-Earth and other proto-planets swept the debris around the sun.
[Quran 81.15-16] [Allah] I swear by the stars, who move who sweep (Kunnas in Arabic كُنَّسِ).
Kans كنس in Arabic means sweep. Kunnas كُنَّسِ means those who sweep. God swears by the stars that move and sweep.

Planetary Orbits in Quran - Speed of Light

38- And the Sun moves on to its destination.
That is the ordinance of the Mighty, the Knower.
(36- Ya-Seen, 38)

THE SPEED OF THE SUN

The sun moves at a speed of 700,000 km/h in the direction of the star Vega, following its orbital path referred to as the Solar Apex. The earth rotates around its own axis while revolving about the sun, moving along with the Solar System.
The sun rises every morning and sets every night. However, the points where it rises and sets are never the same. The earth travels around the sun, which moves in the universe without ever passing through the same point. To imagine that in the course of time elapsed from the time at which we started reading our book until now that we are reading this very page, the sun, along with our world, have traveled a few million kilometers, and that we have not been adversely affected by this motion in any way whatsoever, may give us a clue of God’s system.

RISING POINTS OF THE SUN

5- The Lord of the heavens, and the earth, and all that lies between them, and the Lord of the easts (places where the sun rise).
(37- Who Stand in Row,  5)
Because the earth has a spherical shape, the sun that rises somewhere sets simultaneously somewhere else. Night and day chase each other. Therefore we cannot speak of a given point from which the sun rises, but rather of different points. The hour of dawn is different at every single point of our sphere. Every spot on the earth expects the rise of the sun while it is “rising” at different spots in space.

he sun we behold every morning is a giant nuclear reactor. This reactor, generated by the conversion of hydrogen atoms into helium, performs its task marvelously. We continue our journey in space unaware of the immense speed of our source of life toward our predestined point. God’s omnipotence and the Quran’s miracles will unfold to those who take heed, who have an inquiring mind and are truthful in their approach to the Quranic verses.
43- And such are the parables we set forth for the people,
but only those understand them who have knowledge.
(29- The Spider, 43)

AMENITIES OF THE SUN

The energy generated by the sun in just one second is equal to the energy that three billion power stations would generate on earth in a year. The world receives but two per billion parts of the overall radiation coming from the sun. The slightest decrease in this quantity would turn our world into a place no longer habitable by human beings, as ice age would reign. The distance of our world from the sun, the size of the sun, and the power of reactions within the sun are all calculated infinitesimally. We are part of these calculations. The slightest change in the figures would make life on earth impossible. The creation and the perpetuation of these critical values are the sine qua non of our lives. The sun rotates around its own axis while moving towards a particular destination; the earth, on the other hand, has a variety of movements; it rotates around its own axis, revolves about the sun, being dependent on it, and is affected by the moon. In all the rapid movements, our world changes all the time according to the position of the solar system and galaxies. None of the movements affects our position in relation to the sun nor puts an end to our life on earth.
Life requires carbon-based molecules. These are only generated between -20 degrees Celsius and +120 degrees Celsius. The range of temperatures is vast in the universe, the heat in stars rises to millions of degrees and falls until -273.15 degrees Celsius. The bracket for the ideal medium for the formation of carbon-based molecules is just a thin slice, one per one hundred thousand of the existing heat differences. Had the world failed to conserve its existing heat and quit the bracket it is in, that would be the end of us. But our Creator is ever conscious of our actual needs and everything is controlled by Him.

2- …He has subjected the sun and the moon. Each one runs for an appointed term. He regulates all affairs, and explains the signs in detail that you may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.
(13- The Thunder, 2)
The sun, about 150 million kilometers distant from us, renders life on earth possible. An aircraft traveling at 1000 km/hour would have trouble covering this distance in seventeen years. The temperature in the center of the sun, whose surface temperature is six thousand degrees Celsius, is 15 million degrees Celsius. Not even on the surface of this incandescent gaseous sphere can life be imagined. But at a reasonable distance for us, it is our planet’s closest friend and source of life.( via quranmiracles )
98- Your only god is God. There is no other god but He.
His knowledge encompasses all things.
(20- Ta-He, 98

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى ‏{‏وَالشَّمْسُ
تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا}‏‏"

Sahih International
And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

1- He Almighty says "the sun runs" not moves or walks which is a clear sign that the sun moves in high speed. Today, our scientists say that the Sun moves say that the Sun moves at an estimated speed of about 225 km per second (140 miles per second)
http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/AngelaChan.shtml

2- If we examine the sun's complex orbit and the course of horses running during race , we would find it similar to that of ships & sun -- For them God used the word "run"
3- We find modern researches on stars talking about "Star Streaming" as if they are like a running river:
stream ( Type: verb - Domain: non-thematic ) : flow, run or flow
اِنْسابَ - جَرَى

4 - Although God told us about sun's "mustaqar=resting time/place" in the quran 1400 years ago, we find modern scientists talking about "the solar apex" and define it as
" the direction that the Sun travels with respect to the Local Standard of Rest" In lay terms, it's the "target" within the Milky Way that the Sun appears to be "chasing" as it orbits the galaxy.

http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/flash_html.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_apex

5- Science also tells us that the Sun will come to an end:
"The blazing ball of hot hydrogen that warms our planet and provides energy for life won't be around forever. '

Source: http://www.redorbit.com/news/space/1...ime/index.html

"The Sun will gradually die. As a star's core crashes inwards, it eventually becomes hot enough to ignite another of its constituent atoms, helium. Helium atoms fuse together to form carbon. When the helium supply runs out, the centre collapses again and the atmosphere inflates. The Sun isn't massive enough to fully re-ignite its core for a third time. So it goes on expanding, shedding its atmosphere in a series of bursts. The dying core eventually forms a white dwarf - a spherical diamond the size of the Earth, made of carbon and oxygen. From this point on the Sun will gradually fade away, becoming dimmer and dimmer until its light is finally snuffed out."

Now we can realize quran superiority over all arrogant haters and man-made books as it's the word of God Almighty, The Most High .

“The sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him.” 36:38
>>>
Actually the Hilali/Khan translation states “And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed)”. This translation does not mention a “resting place”
So the sun has a fixed course? Yes it does, it has an orbit; it orbits around the centre of the Galaxy.
So we realise that the sun moves and is on a fixed course. How did the Author of the Quran know this?
As for “for a term (appointed)” well, we all believe that the sun will die one day. Even the sceptics believe this, so this is the appointed term. In simple words, Allah allows the sun to move on its course for a term ( a set time period) and Allah will make it end one day.
I’m not sure why the sceptics brought this up, did they not know that the sun does move on a course [1]? ( yahya snow )

  •  19 In the generally-accepted reading, this phrase is spelled li-mustaqarrin laha, which may be rendered as above or, more conventionally, as "to its point of rest", i.e., the time (or point) of the daily sunset (Razi). However, 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud is reliably reported to have read these words as la mustaqarra laha (Zamakhshari), which gives us the meaning of "it runs [on its course] without having any rest", i.e., unceasingly.by muhammad  assad

    (39:5)

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.

  • It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) one day said:

Do you know where the sun goes? They replied: Allah and His Apostle know best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked: Rise up and go to the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains in that state until it is asked: Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do not discern anything ( unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it would be said to it: Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said. Do you know when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from the faith.

      (The triliteral root “ya-waw-mim” occurs 475 times in the Qur’an. The simple singular form of the word “day” occurs 365 times; the remaining 110 times are not counted because it is “days” in plural (2:80; 2:184 (2 times), 2:185, 2:196; 2:203; 3:24; 3:41; 3:140; 5:89; 7:54; 10:3; 10:102; 11:7; 11:65; 14:5; 22:28; 25:59; 32:4; 34:18; 41:10; 41:16; 45:14; 50:38; 57:4; 69:7; 69:24); and it is “two days” in dual (2:203; 41:9; 41:12); and it is “your/their day” (6:130; 7:51; 21:103; 32:14; 39:71; 43:83; 45:34; 51:60; 52:45; 70:42); and the remaining 70 times are the word “yawma-idhin / that day” (i.e. Day of Resurrection; a particular day)(3:167, 4:42, 6:16, 7:8, 8:16, 11:66, 14:49, 16:87, 18:99, 18:100, 20:102, 20:108, 20:109, 22:56, 23:101, 24:25, 25:22, 25:24, 25:26, 27:89, 28:66, 30:4, 30:14, 30:43, 30:57, 37:26, 37:33, 40:9, 42:47, 43:67, 45:27, 52:11, 55:39, 69:15, 69:16, 69:17, 69:18, 70:11, 75:10, 75:12, 75:13, 75:22, 75:24, 75:30, 77:15, 77:19, 77:24, 77:28, 77:34, 77:37, 77:40, 77:45, 77:47, 77:49, 79:8, 80:37, 80:38, 80:40, 82:19, 83:10, 83:15, 88:2, 88:8, 89:23 (2), 89:25, 99:4, 99:6, 100:11, 102:8). • Period of the Earth’s orbit in the Qur’an? Does the word “day” occur 365 times in the Qur’an? Does the word “month” occurs 12 times in the Qur’an?

(10:5) He is the one who made the sun a source of light and the moon a [reflected] lightand determined for it phasesso that you can know the number of years (sinîn = plural of sanat) as well as the count (of time). God did not create this except in truth. He explains the signs to people who possess knowledge.

How could the word “Sanat” refer to a “solar year” in the Quran in general, while verse 10:5 mentions the moon as a light, as well as its phases, just before “so that you can know the number of years (sinîn = plural of Sanat)”?

The answer is actually very simple since 10:5 refers both to the fact that “the sun” and “the moon” are used to calculate the number of years in the verse. The Quran thus acknowledges both a solar and a lunar calendar. In other words, “so that you can know the number of years (sinîn = plural of sanat) and the count (of time)” refers at the same time to the sun and the moon, and not just to the moon, since both of them allow us to establish the two calendars created by God for the human race.

Let us point out here that the singular of “Sanat” occurs 7 times and its plural occurs 12 times: 7:130 (1); 10:5 (1); 12:42 (1); 12:47 (1); 17:12 (1); 18:11 (1); 18:25 (1); 20:40 (1); 23:112 (1); 26:18 (1); 26:205 (1); 30:4) (1) = 12 words “sanat” (singular and plural).

7 + 12 = 19; it is noteworthy that the sun, the moon and the earth realign in the same relative position every 19 years to the day, which is precisely equal to 235 lunar months. This is called the Metonic cycle. The words “sun” and “moon” intersect 19 times (symbolizing this divine alignment) in 18 verses in the Quran. Once out of 19 occurrences (in verse 29:61), the words “Sun”, “Moon” and “earth” are mentioned in succession symbolizing an alignment.

7. Edward Lane's dictionary mentions the correct definition of “Sanat” and “’Âm”

The concept of “Sanat” and “’Âm” meaning respectively “solar year” and “lunar year” is nothing new, even though their precise meaning was historically altered because of the widespread corruption that affects the world of Islam: The proof can for instance be found in Edward Lane's Arabic-English dictionary (1863 edition) which provides several and sometimes far-fetched definitions regarding the definition of  ’Âm”, for example that it is a synonym of “Sanat”, but does not fail to mention the correct definition from a Quranic point of view, confirming what we observed directly in the Holy Quran:

“…and Suh says in the R, that the سنة (sanat) is longer than the عام (‘âm); that the former is “a single revolution of the sun”, and that the latter being applied to the [twelve] Arabian months [collectively].”

This quote obviously signifies that “Sanat” corresponds to a solar year of 365 days (a single revolution of the earth around the sun) while “âm » refers to the twelve lunar months or the Islamic calendar (354 days on average).

5.2 Why 475 forms of the word “day”?

The word “sun” occurs 33 times in the Quran, which in my opinion symbolizes the 33 solar years that it takes for the solar and lunar calendars to come back together at the same time of the year. For instance, the fast of Ramadan takes place at the same time of the year every 33 years, which means that regardless of where people live on earth, they will fast the same amount of time over a 33 year period if they stay in the same geographical area.

During those 33 years, the sun rotates 475 times around itself, or 19 x 25, (using the concept of a Carrington rotation, or sidereal rotation, explained below*). In other words, the sun experiences 475 “days” over a 33 year period, which coincides with the time it takes for the solar and lunar calendar to come back together at the same time of the year. This is in my view the hidden reason why there are 475 forms of the word “day” in the Quran.

Non simple forms of the word “day”: 3 + 27 + 5 + 5 + 70 = 110 non simple forms.

Miracle of the word day in the Quran - Quranaloneislam.org

165 The reference, at this stage, to lunar months arises from the fact that the observance of several of the religious obligations instituted by Islam - like the fast of Ramadan, or the pilgrimage to Mecca (which is dealt with in verses 196-203)- is based on the lunar calendar, in which the months rotate through the seasons of the solar year. This fixation on the lunar calendar results in a continuous variation of the seasonal circumstances in which those religious observances are performed (e.g., the length of the fasting-period between dawn and sunset, heat or cold at the time of the fast or the pilgrimage), and thus in a corresponding, periodical increase or decrease of the hardship involved. In addition to this, reckoning by lunar months has a bearing on the tide and ebb of the oceans, as well as on human physiology (e.g., a woman's monthly courses - a subject dealt with later on in this surah).by muhammad assad

b) Apart from the specialists in this field, most people are unaware of the perfect correlation between the Julian and the lunar calendar: 235 lunar months correspond exactly to 19 Julian years of 365 1/4 days. Then length of our year of 365 days is not perfect because it has to be rectified every four years (with a leap year) .

With the lunar calendar, the same phenomena occur every 19 years (Julian). This is the Metonic cycle, named after the Greek astronomer Meton, who discovered this exact correlation between solar and lunar time in the Fifth century B.C. by maurice bucaille

The Sun takes roughly 25 days to revolve on its own axis. There are certain differences in its rotation at its equator and poles, (we shall not go into them here) but as a whole, the Sun is animated by a rotating motion.

19*25=475

In the book of Joshua (10:12-13), for example, we read that Joshua spoke to God about prolonging the day so he could kill more of Israel’s enemies. The result was that “The sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.” This geocentric miracle is again mentioned in the book of Habakkuk (3:11) where we read that “The sun and moon stood still in their habitation…” Note that the passages do not say the sun “appeared” to stand still.

In Psalms 19:4-6, we read that God has “set a tent for the sun, which comes forth like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and like a strong man runs his course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and there is nothing hid from its heat.” In Ecclesiastes 1:5 we read “The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.”

In addition to claiming that the sun moves, the Bible is clear that the earth does not. In 1 Chronicles 16:30 we read: “the world stands firm, never to be moved.” Psalms 93:1—a passage used to challenge Galileo—states “Yea, the world is established; it shall never be moved,” a claim repeated verbatim in Psalms 96:10.by karl w. giberson via daily beast

EARTH IS IMMOVABLE//FIXED by Sulaiman Razvi

Atharva Veda 6.77.1 “The heavens have stood, the earth has stood, all creatures have stood. The mountains have stood upon their
foundation, the horses in the stable I have caused to stand.” Tr. Maurice Bloomfield

Some apologists argue that that the word “Asthaat” means “steady” and not fixed or standing still, this doubt can be cleared from the following verse,

Atharva Veda 6.44.1 “The heavens have stood still, the earth has stood still, all creatures have stood still. The trees that sleep erect have stood still: may this disease of thine stand still!” Tr. Maurice Bloomfield

Above is Shripad Damodar Satvalekar’s Hindi translation and below is Kshemkarandas Trivedi’s translation,

Both the Hindi verses translated by Kshemkaran Das Trivedi and Shripad Damodar Satvalekar has translated the word Asthaat as “Tehri hai” which means standing still but some people tries to twist this verse in the following way.

Scholar has cleverly translated the word “Prithvyasthaad” [Prithvi+Asthaat] as “Earth is firm” but then translates the same word as standing still [Tehra hai] when it comes it Trees and Malady. Atharva Veda 6.44.1 is a prayer to stop malady, it says that just as Earth is standing still, trees are standing still, world is standing still, the same way make this malady stand still. Now if we go with apologists definition then it would be like “Let this malady of your stand firm” and that would be illogical, isn’t it? If it’s just about firmness then why does it talk about trees? doesn’t trees shake with a gust of wind? Trees stands in its place and doesn’t move and it being compared to earth proves that earth is motionless according to Vedas.

“Rig Veda 10.149.1 Savitar has fixed the earth with supports ; Savitar has fastened heaven in unsupported space…

Nirukta 10.32 Savitar caused the earth to be fastened with supports. In the supportless atmosphere Savitar has made the heaven firm…

Atharva Veda 13.1.6 …Rohita with his might hath established Earth and Heaven.

Rig Veda 10.89.4, Sam Veda 4.1.5.8 Indra hath fixed [Stopped] the earth and heaven as with an axle…

Following is the Hindi translation by Pandit Ram Govind Trivedi

Yajur Veda 5.16 pastures, fair to do men service. Both these worlds, Vishnu, hast thou stayed
asunder, and firmly fixed the earth with pegs around it.

Yajur Veda 32.6 By whom the heavens are strong and earth stands firmly…

Above verse clearly uses the word “Drdh दृढ” which has several meaning like “Fixed, strong, firm” but mainly refers to something immovable which we shall further discuss in the article.

Rig Veda 3.30.4 …the heaven and earth
and the mountains stands immoveable
.

Above is Pandit Ram Govind Trivedi’s translation and following is Shri Ram Acharya’s translation

[This verse is translated into English from Hindi Bhasya.]

Rig Veda 10.173.4 4 Firm is the sky and firm the earth, and stedfast also are these hills. Stedfast is all this living world, and stedfast is this King of men.

An Indian scientist named Bhaskaracharya (1114-1185) wrote,

”As heat is an inherent property of the Sun and of Fire, as cold of the Moon, fluidity of water, and hardness of stones, and as the air is volatile, so the earth is naturally immovable. For oh! the properties existing on things are wonderful.”-Siddhanta Shiromani Goladhyaaya of Bhaskaracharya, Bhuvankosh, Shloka 5

Many verses clearly uses the word Drdh दृढ which means fixed but Hindus argue that it means firm, whether Drdh means fixed or firm can be better understood after reading Rig Veda 8.78.5; 10.173.4; Atharva Veda 6.88.1, 20.34.2, 19.32.9, 13.1.6-7 and Yajur Veda 1.17 which says the Earth is Fixed. The Atharva Veda 6.77.1 and 6.44.1 explicitly states that Earth is standing still (not moving). But still Hindus will argue that it doesn’t mean what it says. Then what was the logic behind Ishwar revealing so many verses on Earth’s ‘Stability’? It’s plain and clear, the earth is fixed according to the Vedas as proved from verses which says that Earth is standing still. Even if we accept their claim, then why does Vedas talk about Earth along with Heaven that the earth and heaven are firmly fixed? As per the Vedas both heaven and earth are immovable.

The Sanskrit text is given below

यथा [Yatha] = As the, Like the.

सूर्य [Surya] = Sun .

एति [Yeti] = goes.

परि [Pari] = around.
